Frequently asked questions

Q1: When should I see a cardiologist for chest pain?

Any chest pain, pressure or tightness that comes on with effort, lasts more than a few minutes or comes with sweating or breathlessness needs urgent medical attention. If it is severe, go to the nearest emergency department.

Q2: What tests are done in a heart check-up?

A check-up usually includes an ECG, an echocardiogram, a treadmill test, blood pressure, and blood tests such as cholesterol and sugar. Which tests you need depends on your age, symptoms and risk factors.

Q3: Does everyone with a blockage need angioplasty?

No. Some patients are managed with medicines and lifestyle changes. The choice between medicines, angioplasty or bypass surgery depends on tests, symptoms and overall health.

Q4: What should I bring to my first visit?

Bring all earlier reports, prescriptions, angiography images or CD, discharge summaries and a list of your current medicines.

Q5: Can I get a second opinion on my heart treatment?

Yes. You are welcome to bring your reports for a second opinion before a major procedure or when your diagnosis is not clear to you.
